It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Florence “Flo” DiJohn (neé Tonelli). Flo assumed many roles during her 84 years: cherished wife of the late Leonard; loving daughter to the late Peter and Cecilia Tonelli; devoted mother of Anthony (Linda) DiJohn, Peter DiJohn, and Nina (Robert) Vanderwiel; proud “Nani” to Tara (Dylan) DiJohn Bruce, Jenna DiJohn, Isabella McGowan, and Joseph and Luke Vanderwiel; dear sister of Arthur Tonelli and the late Miranda Tonelli, Ramona Wambay, Peter Tonelli, Jr., and Eugene Pigoni; and loving aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Flo was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 5, 1938. She met her late husband, Len, while they were both in high school. Flo and Len were married on November 29, 1959, and shared a renowned love for each other. Together they lovingly raised three children and traveled the world, making a lifetime of memories along the way. Flo was a steadfast partner to Len as he battled illness, never leaving his side and always showing him tender care and affection.

Flo was a compassionate, caring, and loving mother and grandmother to her three children and five grandchildren, enthusiastically supporting their varied hobbies and pursuits. She was a spellbinding storyteller, sharing stories of her childhood on the north side of Chicago, her adventures as a young woman working alongside FBI agents, and her encounters with ghosts at her sister’s infamously haunted house. Beautiful on the inside and out, Flo never missed an occasion to dress up. Her hair was always perfectly coifed, nails long and immaculately painted, and her clothing always in-fashion. Flo was also an avid dog lover, caring for many four-legged friends during her life. She is survived by her beloved white Shih Tzu, Pinky, who will miss Flo (and all of her table scraps) dearly.

Throughout the years, Flo lent her talents to various corporate workplaces and agencies. Before her retirement, she worked as an administrative assistant for a marketing agency, where she was lovingly teased by her coworkers for keeping a small television at her desk to watch her daily soaps. The teasing from her coworkers was a testament to Flo’s playful sense of humor. With a quick wit and a joke always at hand, Flo kept everyone laughing, even in her final days.

Her family and friends will remember Flo as a gracious and kind hostess of countless holidays and gatherings. Always the life of the party, her sparkling smile and infectious laugh filled the room and made everyone feel welcome. She was also a talented home chef, known for her famous bread, mouthwatering “sauce” and meatballs, exceptional homemade lasagna and pizza, and colorful array of Christmas cookies. Flo even self-published a cookbook of her recipes, which remains a popular commodity among her inner circles. Her tradition of hosting gatherings and cooking for loved ones has been passed down to her children and grandchildren, who will continue to make her recipes and emulate her gift for entertaining.

Flo will be missed dearly, but her family takes comfort knowing that she is reunited with the love of her life. Say “hi” to Poppy for us, Flo Jo! We love you and will carry you in our hearts always.
