My heart is heavy but heaven will certainly rejoice upon receiving this outstanding soul. Mrs. Gebauer: I was in 4th grade during a concert when my class was playing our recorders (it sounded awful) to a crowd full of parents in the Evergreen Elementary School gymnasium...and out came Mrs. Gebauer in front of the crowd dancing the polka to "She's Too Fat For Me". The crowed erupted in laughter and we could hardly keep it together, but it distracted the audience from our uncanny toots. I learned to write my first check in her class. I learned that Hostess Zingers and Twinkies were full of sugar and not the best option for a snack. I turned in paper upon paper of extra credit just to get hugs from her. She was an open book. She shared about her childhood experiences and about her family and we sat in awe of her stories. I learned to read the stock market from an S&P hardcopy. The list goes on and on. And throughout all these years, I've though about her often and wondered if I should write her a letter or try to contact her. Shame on me for not doing so. To one of the most inspirational teachers, role models, and caregivers: may you find peace with God and forever be full of laughter and joy!

Where to start? Mrs. Gebauer was an institution; a force of nature. It's not an exaggeration to say that I am who I am and where I am today due in significant measure to her early influence and guidance as my 4th grade teacher at Evergreen (1983-84). She encouraged me, challenged me, inspired me, mentored me, cared for me, and that continued for decades after I moved on to Benjamin, then to West Chicago HS, and finally off to college. She would go on to teach all three of my siblings and later grow close to our family, attending graduation parties, popping in on milestone birthdays, and even showing up at the occasional summer BBQ. Her love for our family was obvious and her investment in our success as both students and people was enduring. As Amy Courtin said, her style was unorthodox, but, boy, was it effective. It's hard to describe, but in some ways she treated her students like little people, rather than children. While focusing on the basics of the curriculum, she wove in life lessons and integrated her own passion for money management and the stock market. It sounds funny, but it worked. It sparked something in me that carries through to this day. I was a "CFO" in her class 37 years ago and it's what I do today as a profession. Funny how life works. Though she had no children of her own, she was a true mother in every sense of the word. Mrs. Gebauer's memory and spirit will be with me always and I am forever grateful for her role in my life. Her reward is in heaven and she is surely among the angels. May she rest in peace.

Mrs. Gebauer was my 4th grade teacher and words can't express the difference she made in my life. I remember her amber necklace and how she would mark our papers with "Love ya!" She created her own stock market curriculum to teach us about far more than reading and writing and math. She was a shining star and I'll be saying prayers for her with much love. Thank you to Sandra for letting me know that she had passed. She loved her family fiercely and she taught others to do the same.
