Sonya Montelo, 82, of Schaumburg, Illinois, formerly of Wheaton, passed away at home on December 10, after succumbing to small cell lung cancer. She is survived by her children, Roland and Patrick (Laurie) of Schaumburg, Illinois, and Heidi Anderson (Eric) of Milton Wisconsin; her grandsons Anthony (Ashley), Joey (Amanda) and Michael (Elise); her siblings Norma Venturini, Linto (Ruth) Venturini, and Maria (Ruedi) Stricker in Switzerland; and many nieces and nephews, here in the United States as well as in Switzerland. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Carlo and her son-in-law Eric Anderson. Sonya was born in Switzerland, lived in Italy during WWII, and came to the United States as a young woman. She settled in Wheaton, where she raised her family and made many lifelong friendships. Sonya was a talented seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She played bridge for many years with the same group of friends, and was known as the “canasta queen”. She was her grandsons’ biggest fan at go kart races back in the day. She touched many lives and will be greatly missed. Memorials in her name can be made to the American Cancer Society
