Born April 3, 1940, Stew passed away July 16, 2017, of pulmonary fibrosis. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Gershbaum; children, Kimberly Gershbaum, Debra Todd, Brenda Mitchell, Jay Mitchell, Shannon (Marc) Goins; sister and brother-in-law, Gayle and Gene Bartolini and Maralynne Henderson; grandchildren, Jimmy, Amber, Daniel, Cheyenne, McKenzie and Tori; great-grandchildren, Robert, Kaylee, Nicholas, Kaiden and Jaxson; his nieces and nephews. He is united with his daughter, Kelly O. Gershbaum; mother, Irene Clark; and father, Harry Gershbaum. Junk hoarder, dessert slayer, lady charmer, deal getter, spirit lifter, heart warmer, corny joke teller, Swede lover and teller of wild tales would like to let the world know he is signing off. He came into this world, grabbed it by the horns, got the girl, loved a lot, lived the big life and couldn’t have been richer. It is with immense pride we report to you how well he lived in this world. His family and friends attest that this man couldn’t have been more honest, reliable and loving. He would also tell you a hogwash story just to make you laugh. He loved hard. He played hard. And he didn’t leave without a fight. He was blessed to have had so much time with those who loved him. Goatman, Bonka, Dad, Papa, Grandpa, Greasy, you were more than we could’ve asked for – may you rest and be in peace. Funeral Friday, 11 a.m. chapel service at Salerno’s Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake St. (3/4 mile west of Bloomingdale/Roselle Road), Roselle. Interment Elm Lawn Cemetery. Visitation Thursday, 3 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For information, 630-889-1700

Looking back, our acquaintance seems now to have been such a brief time and yet you touched our hearts in ways we will never forget. We loved your jokes and funny stories and the easy way you made us feel as if we'd known you all our lives. Our lives were enriched by your friendship. Thanks for the fun and happy memories!

In my phone contacts I have several first and last names. Stew's is "Stew Baby"! We loved him the very first time we met him! We are less now that he is gone. We love you Stew and you will be in our hearts forever! We will think of you every time we grind coffee, every time we see a feather, every time we get a massage, every time we taste test a bottle of wine, or use stemless wine glasses. The memories make us smile with tears in our eyes! God needed a cherished friend! We wish he didn't need ours! Our Love Forever! Len & Linda

Stew was such a nice man. My sympathies and prayers go out to Kim and Debbie as I was your baby sitter and Stew was my first boss, and a good neighbor, when we all lived on Harding Ave.

My sister Nancy introduced our family to Stew at a time when her life was wretched and her heart was beaten down. We watched him through time mend her life and hold her heart until it once again beat joyously. Thank you Stew for the life you gave to Nancy and for the love you shared with us all. Dee will be there to welcome you into heaven....

Uncle Stew was a great person. He always had a smile on his face and was always so kind to others. I will always miss you Uncle Stew and want you to know you were the best Uncle. Thank you for all the times you cooked the Ham on Easter and Christmas. Boy, they were delicious! I will miss all his compliments on my baking. I don't know how I am going to have a piece of cake without him. I will miss all the times we laughed together. The holidays will not be the same without him being there. Rest in Peace, Uncle Stew! I sure will miss you!

To Nancy and Stew's Daughters: I was saddened to hear of his passing. I knew him as a co-worker (Alltapes) and a neighbor. He was a kind and funny man and I still remember laughing at his comments and jokes as well as his age advice. The world was a better place with Stew in it. Your friends will truly miss you. My deepest sympathy to all.

My beautiful friend, Stew, has left us in peace today. He was more than a friend, he is my brother of 50 years. Anyone that knows this gentle giant of leadership, humor and integrity will share my loss and celebration of his remarkable life. His life was rewarded by finding his soulmate Nancy, and the love of his beautiful children. GOD BLESS Stew, I will be expecting your hand-up in the near future. L to RT. Chuck Perry, me, and Stew.
