Andrew A. Kassay, of Bloomingdale, passed away May 14, 2020. He was the beloved husband of the late Martha; devoted father of Kevin (Deirdre) and Bradley (Tammy) Kassay; proud grandfather of Margaret and Andrew Kassay; dear brother of the late Bob and the late Tom Kassay and loving companion of Jean Wheeler. Arrangements by Salerno’s Rosedale Chapels 450 W. Lake St. Roselle, IL. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, suggested CDC guidelines should be followed. Born in the midst of the Great Depression, our dad grew up appreciating the value of hard work and learning to do so many things for himself. He passed this on to my brother and me by way of many projects around our home while we were growing up. While some of his projects might have taken a while to finish, we did learn how to drywall, tile and paint; solder copper pipe; pour and finish concrete; cut down trees; plant more trees; and plant a garden. We also learned the art of replacing the starter for the car, outside, in the middle of winter.

It wasn’t all work, he did share his love of music and the arts with us. Both of us learned to play an instrument. He was the audio-visual director at Lake Park High School and we got to attend football games, basketball games, plays, concerts and other school events.

When our mom, Marti, got sick with what we now know as depression, he fought to make sure she got the treatments she needed and managed to keep us functioning as a family at home. He supported my mom’s choice to get her Master of Library Science degree which led to her second career as a children’s librarian.

When my brother and I took a while to figure out what we wanted to do in life, he was quietly patient but once we figured it out, he was our biggest cheerleader.

Repeated trips with him to Toledo, Ohio to help his aging parents reinforced with us the importance of helping your family. And when our mom got sick again, he was there to take care of her until she passed away.

His two grandchildren were a source of pride and joy for him. Even as his health deteriorated the last few years, he was always encouraging them and listening to their stories.

And he got a second chance at love when his relationship with Jean blossomed. They met through their friends, a group of retired LPHS teachers and their spouses. They enjoyed eating out, going to plays, going to breakfast with their friends and sometimes, just hanging out at home doing crossword puzzles.

Thanks for everything Dad! We love you!

As a colleague at Lake Park, Andy was a great person! His dedication to his work was commendable. He not only got things done for us, but he took time to explain how things worked to make our jobs easier the next time equipment did't work...give a fish...teach to fish! Andy was supportive of a lot of programs as at LP and respected by many! He was at school on weekends and evenings frequently. My sincerest sympathy to his family.

Remember Andy as such a dedicated Lake Park employee. Andy worked in office next to me so I saw him everyday. Always such a pleasant man with a smile and good words which always made your day. To his family my deepest sympathy extended to you.

I had the good fortune to work with Andy for twenty-eight years. Due to my lack of audio-visual prowesss, I called on him on many occasions to bail me out in my classroom and in the fieldhouse when we filmed home basketball games. Andy always helped me with a smile and words of encouragement. I think he believed there was a latent technical ability somewhere in my being. Unfortunately, I am not sure it ever surfaced. Colleagues like Andy made teaching at LP a real joy. We were in the education process together. I know Kevin and Brad have always been proud of him, and he was always very proud of them and their accomplishments. He will be sorely missed.

As a new teacher Andy was always there to help a rookie navigate the rocky shores of public education. I always enjoyed his stories and always left his office with a smile. He was also the original MacGyver... he was rather creative in all things audio visual. Rest In Peace, my friend.

Brad and Kevin, I am saddened to hear of your dad’s passing. I will miss him greatly. When I first came to Lake Park as a “youngster,” Andy was my go-to person for questions about the auditoriums and the equipment. He was a patient and thoughtful teacher. I enjoyed working with him and becoming his colleague as the years progressed. Every time I would see him around town after his retirement, my heart would light up. He had that effect on people. Our conversations always made my day better. I will miss him.

Andy was a kind, well-spoken, and helpful instructor. He was professional and a respectful gentleman who ran an efficient audio-visual department while at Lake Park. Most of all I remember his patient demeanor in teaching and assisting fellow teachers as well as students. Prayers and thoughts to the Kassay family.

Andy was a a terrific guy who was well thought of at Lake Park High School. He was a valuable member of the Lancer family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin and Bradley as well as all the family members. I was so happy for Andy and Jean that they made a connection and had some wonderful years together. Once again our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Rest in Peace Andy. Marty and Patt Quinn

Kevin & Brad, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your dad was one of my favorite "old timers" at Lake Park. He and I had lots of interesting discussions about Science, History and the world in general. I saw him last year at his income tax appointment. While he seemed frail, he obviously still had his great sense of humor. I will always remember his booming voice which was seldom raised in anger. May he rest in peace. Dean Bladel
