Bernabe D. Hernandez, best known as our beloved, Papang, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Born on June 11, 1924 in Manila, Philippines, Papang lived his 99 years of life full of adventure and youthfulness alongside the family he built with his now late wife (2012), Aurora E. Hernandez, whom he loved deeply. Papang immigrated to Chicago in 1980 with his children, where he lived the American Dream of traveling with family, relaxing at home completing hundreds of word searches & crossword puzzles, and caring for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He is loved and adored by his 6 children, Aurora H. Garcia, Bernabe E. Hernandez, The late Conrado Rene Hernandez, Zenaida H. Avelino, Maria Susan H. Gabon, & Emmanuel E. Hernandez. His legacy is also carried on throughout his 14 grandchildren (Angelo Garcia, Chachi Garcia, Joni Magsino, Donna Santos, Zoilo Hernandez, Paola Hernandez, Jigger Hernandez, Lloyd Hernandez, Adele Avelino, Dennis Avelino, Chelsea Gabon, Brian Gabon, Macy Marie Hernandez, & EJ Hernandez) and 14 great-grandchildren (Cailin, Sofie, Max, Cooper, Izzy, Zoey, CJ, RJ, Heart, Paige, Ian, Andrew, Nikki, Joris).

We will always remember him for his kind soul, silliness, unconditional love, and youthful spirit. Until his very last breath, Papang lived a fulfilling and “very, very happy” life surrounded by his pride and joy, family.

It is an honor to know him, love him, and be loved by him in this lifetime. He will forever be remembered and loved in our hearts.
