Elizabeth “Betty” Duffy, nee McGowan; Beloved wife of Albert Duffy, former owner of Sabre Finer Foods in Cicero; Devoted mother of Alanna (Jeremiah) Pelowski of Winona, MN; Brian (Marianna) Duffy of San Marcos, CA; Frank Duffy; Patrick (Eloise) Duffy of Tokyo, Japan; Loving daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth McGowan; Dear sister of Noreen Maye, Margaret Mazzuca and preceded in death by five siblings: Mary, Rodger, Martin, Packy, Frank; Dear Grandmother “Nana” of Brian, Sofia and Waylon; Dear aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Betty grew up on the West Coast of Ireland in County Mayo and came to the States when she married Al. Betty had a drive for life and a life well-lived. She was proud of her Irish heritage and passed it along to all who knew her, sharing her Soda Bread and encouraging her daughter to stick with Irish Dance. Her subtle Irish wit will be missed. She modeled the value of hard work and used to say, “If something is worth doing, it is worth doing right the first time!” She was great at gathering family and friends together and liked to know what everyone was up to. Her children and their friends all have great memories of Betty, especially those who called her the “Cookie Lady.” She loved each of the positions she held at Lake Park High School, getting to work with students and staff regularly. She knew how to make the perfect cuppa tea with toast and always ensured guests didn’t leave the house hungry or thirsty. Betty loved her family and will be greatly missed. She was truly a gift.

Sincere sympathy to Albert and family & to Noreen and Margaret & the McGowan Family on the sad passing of Betty. I knew her many years ago when we attended Drumgallagh School together - she was always great fun to be around. May she rest in peace.

Betty and Al met the night of our (John & Vickie O'Connell) wedding on October 20, 1972. The first time we met Betty we loved her! Betty dated Al for the next 10 months until her visa ran out and she had to go back to Ireland. We were quite a foursome! As soon as she left, Al started coming by our apartment almost daily, asking me to find him a flight to Ireland. He was determined to go over, marry her and bring her back to Chicago. She was surprised when he showed up and even more surprised when he proposed! So surprised that she initially said "No". He was persistent and they got married in Ireland! When they came home to Chicago they had nowhere to live (Al hadn't thought about that)! So, we met them at the airport with the keys to our car and apartment for them to use while we left town for a few weeks! Betty was always so much fun and I was always envious of how easy going she was! Even though she had heard Al's jokes hundreds of times she always listened to him tell them as if she had never heard them before. She would wait for everyone else's reaction without interrupting or saying a word! John and I commented on this many times. She was loved by everyone who knew her! What a wonderful friend she was for over 49 years! We think of Betty as family (for a long time our kids probably thought the Duffy kids were their cousins). We love you Betty! You will be missed! Rest in peace! Vickie and Johnny O'Connell
