Douglas John Zegler, 64, of Schaumburg passed away after a long battle with heart disease on July 2 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Doug was the beloved husband of and is survived by Debra Zegler (nee Price) and a devoted father to Briana Zegler, her fiancé, Joseph Michalakes, and grand-dog, Hazel Mae Zegler.
Doug was the loving son of the late Edward and Gertrude Zegler of Des Plaines. He was the loving brother of and survived by Daniel Zegler and Cynthia Berman, Donald and Megan Zegler, and Rosemary and Richard Frank. He was the dear uncle to Jennifer and Robert Zegler; James, Bridget, John and Kevin Zegler; and Gregory and Michael Frank. He was a valued in-law to the late John Price and is survived by Patricia Price, William and Alissa Price, and John and Cynthia Price.
Doug had an adventurous life as a child growing up in Des Plaines. Known to many as a gentle giant, the 6’ 6” Doug played football at Maine West High School and at Triton College, where he earned an associates degree in Construction Technology. He was a loyal and hard-working master carpenter and a project manager. True to his compassionate and generous nature, he often spent spare time doing repairs for family, friends and neighbors. He met his wife Debbie through mutual friends in early 1991 and they were married in March 1992. In January 1999, his world changed for the better when he became a father to Briana. He loved listening to music, especially Johnny Cash, and enjoyed watching Two and a Half Men. For the past 10 years, Doug lovingly took care of his wife as she continues to battle multiple sclerosis.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 9 from 3-9 pm at Salerno’s Rosedale Chapels, 450 W Lake Street, Roselle, IL 60172 (3/4 mile west of Bloomingdale/Roselle Road). A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 10, at St. Marcelline Church, 822 Springinsguth, Schaumburg, IL, at 10:30 am. A private internment will happen later.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or the American Heart Association.
