Paul J. Concepción, M.D.

  May 30, 1930 – January 5, 2025

Dr. Paul J. Concepción, 94, passed away at home peacefully on January 5, 2025. Born

in Havana, Cuba, on May 30, 1930, to Rafael and Mary Concepción, Paul grew up

alongside his brother Rafael and sister Liliana (deceased). He attended Belen Jesuit

Preparatory School before earning his medical degree from the University of Havana

  Medical School in 1955.

In pursuit of his medical career, Paul moved to Chicago to complete his residency at St.

Anne's Hospital, where he met nursing student Santa Rose Brunner. The two married

and had five children: Anne-Marie, Rafael (Janet), Paul (Betty), John, and Mary Frances

(Scott). Though they divorced in 1968, Paul’s dedication to family continued. He later

married Luisa Alvarez, with whom he had two children, Michael (Blanca) and Joseph

(Cary). After their divorce in 1991, Paul found his true soulmate, Joy Martin. Together,

they built a life filled with love, raising her late son Brian’s children, Joe (Giulia) and

  John (Molly), as their own.

A devoted and compassionate family physician, Paul served the Chicago community for

nearly 50 years including 30 years from his office on Harlem Avenue. He was on staff at

both Gottlieb and Westlake Hospitals. Known for his tireless dedication, he continued

making house calls to elderly patients long after the practice had become rare.

Beyond his medical practice, Paul enjoyed his daily trips to the pool for exercise, golf,

solving puzzles of all kinds, cheering for Chicago sports teams, and sharing laughter

through his endless repertoire of jokes.

Paul is survived by his children, 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and countless

patients and friends whose lives he touched through his warmth, humor, and dedication.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held on February 2nd. Please contact the family for

more information. Also, please consider making a gift in his honor to the Addison Park

District. Donations can be arranged by calling 630-656-6200. All donations will be used

to make improvements to their pool facilities, which he loved.
