Fred "Cubby" Martin

Fred (Cubby) Martin, 74, born October 25th,1950, passed away Tuesday afternoon, June 10th, 2025.

Fred was the unofficial mayor of everywhere, always finding a hand to shake because he seemingly knew someone every place he went. He was many things in his life. He was the son of an Italian mother, Joy Martin, who gave him his love of food and cooking. From his father, Fred (Nando) Martin, he inherited the importance of family. He was the brother and cousin you could count on to get into the kind of hijinks that led to innumerable lifelong memories, as well as a couple stitches here and there. Freddy was the only member of the St. Frances D-Note club, of which he was very proud. He was a leader and mentor who got to accomplish a life goal of owning his own business, through which he made some of his deepest friendships.

When Fred wasn’t at work, or with his family, he was fishing or hunting. From his youth to just days before his passing he loved being at or on the water. He was a very honest fisherman, who would almost never exaggerate the size of what he caught. He passed his love of the outdoors to his daughters and shared it with anyone who wanted to come along.

Who Fred most importantly was, was a hubby, a pops, a papa, and a brother.

He leaves behind the love of his life, Chris Martin. Fifty-three years of the kind of marriage that people hope for, adorable to watch even five decades in. Together they raised two daughters, Nikki Vensas and Jessi Steinberg, who have the heart, empathy, resilience and compassion of their mother, and the drive, worldliness, hunger for adventure and strength of their father. Papa was a very proud grandfather to Max and Leo Steinberg. The way his face lit up when they laughed or smiled will forever be in our memories. To Tom Martin, Cub was big brother. Someone to share hobbies and life with, even if it was at the detriment of a rental car.

Fred loved his life. He made sure his family heard it often. He had many accomplishments to be proud of whether it be career, family, or experiences. The hole left is deep and wide, but from which will bloom many great things as he spent his life providing his friends and family with so many memories, foundations, and strengths.

Fred Anthony Martin will be waked Monday, June 16th, 3:00 pm-7:00 pm at Salerno’s Chapels. 450 W. Lake Street, Roselle, IL 60172.
