George Economou

George Economou – Loving Husband, Beloved Father to Three Daughters, and Cherished Grandfather

(February 18, 1935 – August 22, 2026)

George Economou, originally of Kertezi, Kalavryta, Greece, passed away at the age of 91 with his loving family by his side, leaving a rich legacy of devotion and hard work.

Born in Kertezi to Panagiotis and Elpiniki Economou, George remained deeply rooted in his Greek heritage throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his parents; his four brothers: the late Spilios (late Baso) Economou, the late Andrea (late Katina) Economou, the late Petro (late Danae) Economou, and the late Dimitrios (nee Litsa) Economou; and his two sisters: the late Panagiotia Economou and the late Dina (Petro) Fragias. George proudly served in the Greek Army before leaving his homeland to begin a new chapter in Canada. His journey eventually brought him to Chicago, Illinois, where he built a full life and established his family home.

George was the cherished husband of Olga and the loving father of Elpiniki "Elpi" Economou, Efstathia "Effie" and her husband John Ascaridis, and Kleopatra "Patricia" and her husband Dimitrios "Jim" Kollias.

He was an adoring Papou to Tommy and his wife Reina, George, Nicholas, Evan, Olivia, and Arianna. His grandchildren brought him immense happiness, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with them.

He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews across the United States, Canada, and Greece.

Family gatherings were central to George’s world. He and Olga loved preparing traditional Greek dishes together, especially during holiday celebrations. Easter was a cornerstone of family life, highlighted by George turning the lamb on the spit—a cherished tradition that brought everyone together around the table.

Full of vitality, George was a natural socializer and a legendary night owl who thrived on just a few hours of sleep. He delighted in starting his day with Greek coffee and spending afternoons at the kafenio (καφενείο), playing games and sharing stories with friends. Evenings were often reserved for quiet, late-night card games with Olga.

As an entrepreneur, George built and operated Gogo’s Pizza, where he earned his affectionate nickname, "Gogo." He also built a fleet of ice cream trucks under GoGo's Ice Cream, delivering simple summer joy to neighborhood families. These businesses reflected his friendly nature and provided the perfect backdrop to connect with his community.

From his early years in Kertezi to his journey through Canada and his final home in Chicago, George lived with courage, determination, and optimism. His memory will endure through the family he adored and the many lives he brightened along the way.
