Born in Vietnam, Hai was raised in generations of fisherman.
He came to America in 1978 and first resided in New Orleans. He moved to Chicago in 1979 and married Karen Huynh. The family then settled in Addison, Illinois.
He went to school to learn the field of an electrical technician. He started his career as an auto mechanic and later became a welder.
Hai is the fifth child of seven kids. He is also the father of three sons, Henry, Henson and Michael.
