Irenus Lechtenberg

Irenus Lechtenberg, known fondly by many as Russ, Sam, or Rainey, passed away on April 7, 2026, in Illinois, leaving behind a legacy etched deeply in the hearts of those who knew him. Born on February 26, 1939, in Ossian, Iowa, Irenus bore the qualities of a true patriarch—humble, loving, and endlessly devoted to his family and community.

A retired Service Engineer from IBM, Irenus’s career was marked by a quiet distinction and a profound intellect that thrived on problem-solving. He had a natural gift for fixing things, an art he pursued with both patience and passion. Eschewing instructions, he often relied on his keen mind—and on occasion, YouTube—to unravel the mysteries of any challenge before him. His love of tinkering and gardening complemented his practical skills, offering him a lifetime of satisfaction in nurturing and restoring.

Though the suburbs of Chicago were his home for many years, it was the family farm in Iowa that served as his sanctuary and refuge, a place where his spirit was most alive. There, among the cows and horses he cherished, Irenus was at peace. His connection to the land and its creatures revealed the farmer at heart within him—a side of his soul that spoke of tradition, stewardship, and quiet strength.

Irenus was more than a skilled craftsperson; he was a loving husband to Marcia Lechtenberg, a devoted father to Todd (Sharon), Kevin (Kate), Paul, and Terri Ihnat (Brian), and a cherished grandfather to Amanda Gattenby (Will), Lauren Williamson (Patrick), Hannah, Nate, Bridget, Ryan, and Rachel Lechtenberg. The joy in his eyes when surrounded by his great-grandchildren—Claire, Emmy, Madeline, and Cade Gattenby, and Cadyn Williamson—was a testament to the enduring warmth he radiated. His familial bonds were the proudest accomplishments of his life, and he nurtured them with unwavering care.

Irenus’s warmth and kindness extended beyond bloodlines. As a brother to Inez Hageman, he upheld the family legacy with grace, carrying memories of his late mother, Elizabeth, father, Greg, and brother, Leon. A man who could strike up a conversation with anyone, he was known for putting others first, exuding unconditional care and a love that never sought recognition. To those who knew him, he was the embodiment of humility and learning, a friend who could laugh, share stories, and inspire with simple, profound wisdom.

The quiet strength of Irenus Lechtenberg will be deeply missed. His spirit—fun-loving, tender, and steadfast—remains imprinted on all who had the privilege of knowing him. In remembering Russ, Sam, or Rainey, we celebrate a life lived fully, a legacy built on love, and a soul forever tied to the soil of Iowa and the hearts of his family.

Services will be held beginning with a visitation on April 14, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Salerno's Rosedale Chapels in Roselle, Illinois, followed by a prayer service on April 15 at 9:45 a.m. and will then proceed to St. Isidore Parish in Bloomingdale, Illinois, for Mass starting at 10:45 a.m. Visitation will continue in Ossian, Iowa, at Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church on April 17 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the prayer/rosary service will be held on April 18 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Church.  

Irenus Lechtenberg’s passing marks the end of a remarkable journey, but the love he sowed will continue to bloom in the lives of his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
