Jack I. Castronova

Jack I. Castronova, 72, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, surrounded by the family who loved him deeply. After living courageously with multiple sclerosis for many years, he met every challenge with quiet strength, an unwavering sense of humor, and an appreciation for the simple things in life that never faded.

Born on April 15, 1954, in Chicago to Jack and Nancy Castronova, Jack grew up alongside his sisters, Francine, Anita, and Nancy. He graduated from Proviso West High School before spending many years as a custodian at Glenbard West High School. He took great pride in his work and became a familiar face in the halls, always ready with a smile, a joke, or a helping hand. Jack believed there was dignity in hard work, and he found happiness in the ordinary moments that many people overlook.

Before meeting the love of his life, Susanne, Jack was already a proud father to his daughters, Jaimie Schulte and Jessica Martin. The two met by chance at a neighborhood pool while Jack was there with Jaimie—a story he loved to tell for years afterward. Together they built a life filled with laughter, unconditional love, and countless memories surrounded by family.

More than anything, Jack loved being a husband, a father, and especially Poppy. Being Poppy wasn't about grand gestures—it was simply who he was. His six grandchildren—Brianna, Mia, Olivia, Sierra, Cooper, and Tyler—always knew they could count on him. He had a way of making them feel safe, accepted, and loved exactly as they were. Whether he was making them laugh with one of his stories, teasing them with his goofy sense of humor, or simply sitting beside them, Poppy made every moment better. His presence brought comfort, his laughter was contagious, and being with him always felt like home.

Jack wasn't perfect—and that's exactly what made him so lovable.

He had an incredible ability to get lost, even on roads he'd driven countless times. His driving became the source of plenty of family stories and laughter over the years. He could carry on a conversation through an entire movie without missing a beat, often telling the same story more than once—and somehow making it entertaining every time. He loved singing along to 70s rock, admired classic cars, enjoyed Fridays spent ice skating or roller skating with his girls, and never turned down a perfectly cooked steak with a Pepsi (without ice, of course). He had a huge heart for animals, a mischievous streak that kept everyone smiling, and a free spirit that reminded those around him not to take life too seriously.

Anyone who truly knew Jack also knew he enjoyed life on his own terms. Whether it was listening to music, sharing laughs with friends, relaxing with a little extra help, or simply enjoying the moment, Jack embraced life with authenticity and never pretended to be anyone but himself. He found joy in simple pleasures and encouraged those around him to do the same.

Even as multiple sclerosis gradually changed so much of his life, it never changed who he was. His body became weaker, but his kindness, optimism, and sense of humor remained untouched. During his days at the nursing home, he proudly earned the nickname "Mr. Popular." Residents and staff alike were drawn to his warmth, his stories, and his ability to make almost anyone laugh. He never let his circumstances define him—instead, he continued defining himself by the way he treated people.

Jack is survived by his devoted wife, Susanne; his loving daughters, Jaimie Schulte and Jessica Martin; his cherished grandchildren, Brianna, Mia, Olivia, Sierra, Cooper, and Tyler; and his sisters, Anita Peters and Nancy Hoblit.

He was welcomed home by his parents, Jack and Nancy Castronova, and his sister, Francine Muccianti.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jack's life on Friday, July 17, 2026, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Salerno's Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake Street, Roselle, Illinois. A chapel service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m., after which Jack will be laid to rest at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Hillside.

Jack taught those around him that happiness isn't about having a perfect life. It's about loving your family, laughing often, helping others whenever you can, and finding joy in life's everyday moments. He will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his endless stories, his terrible sense of direction, the way he talked through nearly every movie, and, most of all, the way he made people feel. If you were lucky enough to know Jack, you knew you had someone in your corner.

His family will miss him deeply, but they find comfort knowing his love lives on in every shared laugh, every family gathering, every old rock song turned up just a little too loud, and every memory that begins with the words, "Remember when Poppy..."
