Lois N. Flanders, age 79, passed away peacefully after an eight-year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Beloved wife of 57 years of Thomas A. Flanders, Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille and Albert Stanley Ostrander. She is survived by her two brothers Tom and Paul and their spouses, Karen and Barbara. Also, numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Lois was born and raised in the Chicago Ashburn neighborhood. She graduated from Bogan High School, attended Knox College for two years before transferring to the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana from which she graduated in 1968. During that time, she met and married the love of her life Tom. They were married in June of 1968
The same year she graduated, Lois married Tom while he was on two-week leave from the Army. After the Army Lois and Tom lived in Champaign-Urbana for a year then moved to the Blue Island area where Tom started teaching at Eisenhower High School. Eventually Lois was employed at the same school. Lois and Tom retired in 2001 and they moved to Hoffman Estates. She spent most Summers in the Flanders Family Lake Property near Three Lakes, Wisconsin: 30 years in the Log Cabin across the road from the main Lake Place and finally moved into the Lake Place after a complete re-build which Lois designed. The Wisconsin property was the only constant place of her married life.
In Wisconsin, Lois enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends and family especially around the ten-foot table in the center area, feeding the animals, the pot luck driveway gatherings, boating, fishing, walks, hikes, and visiting neighbors along the lake.
In the Chicago area Lois enjoyed going to concerts, theater, ball games and bowling. As well as crosswords, sudoku and other puzzles.
In retirement Lois and Tom traveled nationally and internationally.
Lois's smile, generosity, loyalty, and welcoming nature will be missed by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer’s Association appreciated.
