It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael McGee on Monday, April 6. Born on September 21, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York to Michael McGee Sr. and Elaine Regan McGee. He is the oldest of four children with siblings Dan, Mary, and Frank.
Michael has been a prolific architect, building his own business of McGee Architects with a large portfolio of custom homes, commercial, and municipal buildings standing testament to his talent and skills. He took great satisfaction from his work, and he valued the relationships he built with his clients, some he has worked with for decades.
He has worked hard all of his life, starting at 14 as a paper boy and going on to be a cycling ice cream vendor, Baskin Robbins ice cream scooper, steel mill worker on the midnight shift, restaurant manager, fireman, EMT, draftsman, intermittent grocery store worker, Mall Santa Claus, and of course, an Architect. At times, he held down three jobs to support his young family.
Michael is proud and loving father to Michael McGee (Matilda), Ryan McGee (Lindsey), Matthew McGee (Kristen), and Meghan McGee with their mother, Patty (McNamee) McGee.
Married again to Lisa (LoPorto) McGee in 2011, with kindness and generosity he became a fatherly presence to Lisa’s 4 daughters, and their families. He was the adoring “Poppy” of all the grandchildren (Rylee, Colin, Amelia, Eli, Miles, Riley, Foster, Sawyer, Ben, Nora, Claire, and Conor) and after his knee replacement, he delighted in the nickname of “Robopoppy”.
Mike loved running, Disney World, and running at Disney World; earning multiple medals in the shape of Mickey, Donald and Goofy, won through marathons and then memorialized by a tattoo of the Disney trinity on his leg. Michael was a fan of Italian cooking, comic books, superheroes, anything with Superman – in fact his business cards featured the Daily Planet building. He wore his life on t-shirts, whether it was his political views, his love of running, his sense of whimsy, his love of Guiness, his love for travel, his favorite bands or movies, or his pride in being Poppy. You always knew what he thought and felt because he wore it on his sleeve.
He leaves a sudden and deep void in the lives of many, and he will be terribly missed and forever celebrated.
