Oscar Espinola Fajardo

Oscar “Chito” Espinola Fajardo, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, remembered for his quiet strength, kindness, generosity, and humility. To many, he was a gentle giant whose presence spoke louder than words.

Born and raised in Sorsogon, Bicol, Chito discovered his passion and talent for basketball at a young age. After receiving a scholarship to San Sebastian College, he pursued basketball in Manila and became the first person from his province to play professional basketball. The sport opened the door to a life beyond Sorsogon and became an important part of his journey.

Chito faced many challenges throughout his life with patience and perseverance. He and his wife of 53 years, Yolanda “Yoly” Ibuna Fajardo, eventually migrated to Chicago to build a better life for their family. He worked hard to create opportunities for those he loved, always putting his family first.

Chito is survived by his wife, Yolanda; his children, Mark (April) Fajardo of Montgomery, Illinois; Lyndon (Melissa) Fajardo of Taguig, Philippines; Oscar (Trixie) Fajardo of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; and Leanne Michelle (Todd) Rich of Naples, Florida; and his beloved grandchildren, Justin, Bella, Roco, Mila, Rosie, Asher, and Manu. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Agustin Escober Fajardo and Caridad Espinola Fajardo.

Chito was never one for long conversations or grand gestures. He showed his love through simple acts of kindness—being present, checking in, listening, and making sure those around him were cared for. His family and friends knew they could always count on him.

It is especially meaningful to his family that Chito passed away on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Throughout their 53 years together, Chito and Yoly shared a deep devotion to Our Lady and to the Divine Mercy. Their faith remains a source of comfort and strength to the family.

Chito leaves behind a legacy not only as a professional athlete, husband, father, and grandfather, but as a man of quiet character, unwavering perseverance, and deep love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

May he rest in peace.
