On March 1, 2022, Stephen Nelms passed away at peacefully at home. He was
surrounded by his loving family, Carrie, Xena and Kannon. Steve was a wonderful husband,
truly devoted dad, great brother, loved brother-in-law, spunky uncle to many and a great-
uncle to many more. He made sure the coolers where always full, the brats were cooking
(with sauerkraut) on the grill and that everyone always felt welcomed and loved. He truly
enjoyed his job and his ability to help others and make sure everyone was treated fairly. He
had coached many teams throughout the years – baseball, football, softball, and basketball.
He was always happy when he heard a former player call ‘Hey coach’. He enjoyed hearing
stories of how they were doing and where their lives took them. He took much pride in his
home and yard – planting his garden, which fed many throughout the years (Melrose
peppers, anyone?), and creating a backyard oasis where all were welcome. His biggest joy
had always been Xena and Kannon. He was so proud and bragged about them to anyone
who would listen- they were truly his passion and he enjoyed seeing how they have grown
into such wonderful adults.
We will be hosting a Celebration of Life at Salerno’s Rosedale Chapel, in Roselle, IL. In lieu
of flowers for the Celebration, we ask that you plant some flowers or a vegetable garden
this spring, or donate to a local community garden.
We have been nothing but blessed knowing him. He always made his house a warm, loving
home, and we will miss him dearly,
Remember, it’s the journey, not the destination.
We will meet again.
