Joseph P. Atria, 70, devoted and loved husband, father,
grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away July 8,
2023. Born May 15, 1953, to Joseph and Frances Atria,
Joseph Atria grew up in Chicago with his late sisters Cathy
and Becky and his brother, Philip. He attended Steinmetz
College Prep High School in Chicago, where he met
Mariella, his present wife, and many of his devoted
friends, before attending Northeastern Illinois University
and receiving a doctorate in education from Northern
Illinois University. A lifelong educator, Dr. Atria was a
high school math teacher for many years before becoming
the principal at Sullivan High School until retiring in
2011. Along with teaching, Dr. Atria served in various
administrative roles for the Chicago Public Schools
system. In addition to working in education, he had a
passion for real estate, owning multiple properties across
the Chicagoland area throughout his life and successfully
founding Atria Realty, which he owned and operated for
many years. However, his proudest achievement was his
loving family. He is survived by his wife, Mariella (nee
Rotondi), his two adored children, Valerie (Geoffrey) King
and Joseph; his three grandchildren, Eleanor, Liam and
Everett King, his brother, Philip, and many cherished
members of his extended family. He was predeceased by
his mother, Frances L. Atria (nee Digati); his father,
Joseph, and his sisters, Cathy Petrucci and Mary “Becky”
Atria. A memorial will be held Saturday, July 15 from
12pm to 4pm (services beginning at 2:30 pm) at Salerno’s
Rosedale Chapel, 450 W. Lake St., Roselle, IL 60172
(www.salernofuneralhomes.com). In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Children First Fund, the
Chicago Public Schools Foundation, at
ChildrenFirstFund.org.
