Alice B. Kvistad, 84, formerly of Elmwood Park and Bartlett, passed away peacefully on Thursday May
11, 2023. She was born on November 3, 1938 in Chicago, IL to John F. and Agnes F. (Kudingo) Solarz.
Alice graduated from St. Pat’s High School, Class of 1956. She then went on to attend Quincy
College. It was there that she met the love of her life, Alvin J. Kvistad, Jr. They married on October 8,
1960 at St. Tarcissus Catholic Church and spent the next 53 years together. They had three children,
Alvin III, Michael and Victoria.
In the mid-1970’s, Alice began her career at Plunkett Furniture, in River Forest, IL. She was the office
manager and greeted all who came in with her big, beautiful smile. Everyone, from customer to
management to the custodians and delivery teams, were important and made to feel special by Alice.
Most days, she would either ride her yellow bike to work, or simply walk because it brought her joy.
Outside of working at Plunkett, Alice’s main job was being the best Mom. She was involved and
supportive in all three of her children’s lives. Whether she was assisting at a function or watching her
children’s events, she was always there. She was at every PTA meeting, moving from general member to
chapter President. She was also involved in scouting, as a leader and Den Mother. Alice never missed a
sporting event, concert or play. She was also an extraordinary hostess. Every graduation, birthday party
and holiday was spent at her home with abundant food and music. Her door was open to anyone and
everyone, including anyone her children brought into their home. She was always accepting, welcoming
and loving.
Not only was Alice the best Mom, but she was also a devoted and caring wife to her late husband, Alvin,
who preceded her in death on May 3, 2014. Together they enjoyed dancing, singing along to Johnny
Mathis, spending summers at the family home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, traveling worldwide and
dressing to the nines, as often as life would allow her. Her sense of fashion and beauty remained with
her, even after Alvin’s passing. During the fall seasons, Al and Alice would travel anywhere warm, usually to Tuscon, Arizona or Clearwater, Florida. Alice loved to soak up the sun.
A few other favorite past times of Alice throughout her life included being a long-time member of the
Elmwood Park Infant Welfare Society, a great bridge player and a wonderful grandma. Alice was blessed
to have a tight knit circle of seven life-long friends, which extend back to grade school; so many
adventures and memories were made by this group over 70 years and even into Alice’s time at Sunrise.
Alice is survived by her children and their spouses, Alvin III (Mardell) Kvistad, Michael (Ericka) Kvistad,
Victoria (Donald) Malcolm; grandchildren, Megan (Matthew) Schlais, David (Stevie) Kvistad, Christopher
(Lauren) Kvistad, Samantha Cichy, Alexandra Cichy, Franki Nendza, Melissa Malcolm and Mackenzie Malcolm; great grandchildren, Landon, Colton, Charlotte, Aiden and two on the way; her brother, John (Charlotte) Solarz; a brother-in-law, William (Sharon) Kvistad; a sister-in-law, Kathy Casey Kvistad South; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Jr.; her parents; her parents-in-law, Judge Alvin Sr. and Norah Patricia Kvistad; and a brother-in-law, John Kvistad.

In lieu of flowers donations to The Alzheimer’s Association Appreciated.
A special thank you is extended to Sunrise of Bloomingdale, specifically the Reminiscence care team, for
ten years of caring for our Mom. Another special thank you to Taylor, our angel on Earth, from
Ascension Alexian Brothers Hospice, who compassionately cared for Mom, for the last two years. We
will be forever grateful for the care you gave to our Mom and to all of us as her family.

I had the great fortune of meeting Alice after I started working at Sunrise of Bloomingdale. Her smile and twinkling eyes just lit up our community. She had a great sense of humor and a quick laugh. Her expressive face and exaggerated eye rolls were legendary. I will never forget our one-on-one times and what a true delight she was.

Dear Alice, what a blessing you were for our 70 year friendship. When God made you, he threw away the key. You were the most loving, kind, insightful person I’ve known who always brought out the best in everyone you knew. Rest in peace, love you.
