I thought Uncle Nick would be there forever. He was my guardian angel, always calling me to find out how I was. He had a few nieces that were in poor health and I guess he thought that it was his duty to check up on them every now and then to keep them well. His love would come thru with every call. He was a very loving and caring man. He loved to cook and bake and sent me several of his cherished recipes and I will cherish them always. He loved my son Tim and whenever he visited Uncle Nick he would call me and could not say enough about how much he enjoyed Tim’s visits and what a great person he thought he was. We will miss him so very much. I looked forward to his calls so much. He lived a wonderful long and beautiful life. God bless your soul, Uncle Nick and Rest In Peace, you deserve it. We will never forget you and will love you forever. Paul & Roseann & Tim

It's time to talk about "THE FOOD". Uncle Nick and Aunt Barbara loved food. Everyone knows how to eat food. Not everyone knew how to make it. They both learned from their parents. They passed down their love & expertise to their children. And to relatives, maybe a nephew that really likes cookies. I worked near their home on Melvina in Chicago. One December I told my partner that I had a taste for cookies. I told him "I know a place". We stopped by Aunt Barbara and Uncle Nick's house. And guess what, they had homemade cookies. Later on I knew I had to learn. I attended class at THE PITZAFERRO BAKING SCHOOL. I make cookies at Christmas time. It brings back the happy memories of my youth. We had occasion to travel to Laurino Italy. This was the ancestral home of the Grippo family. Uncle Nick learned to make some of the local dishes that were made by our Italian relatives in the old ways. Upon return from Italy their was a dinner at the Pitzaferro home. All the dishes that he learned in Italy were made. We celebrated Uncle Nick's 100th Birthday by doing what he loved, EATING. We had lunch and dinner for several days. I had to pace myself but Uncle Nick enjoyed every meal. So, when you think of Uncle Nick and Aunt Barbara it should trigger hunger within you It means it's time to have a cookie. Con Amore Pietro

Today I learned of Nick's passing. I cried. I met Nick when I came to the Heron Club to visit my sister, Myra. Living in Maryland, I only visited once or twice a year, but I usually stayed several weeks. I liked Nick the minute I met him. He had such a warm and friendly smile and would talk lovingly about his "beautiful wife Barbara" and his family. As much as I looked forward to seeing my sister, I always enjoyed talking and laughing with Nick and he even sent me a couple of recipes (at my request, compliments of his daughter) and I will truly cherish them. I will always remember him. God bless him. Lois Freeze

We could always count on a warm smile from Nick whenever we stopped by the Heron Club to see our mother, Myra. He had the most kindly eyes. He never complained. He was very independent. Nick was very proud of his family. He loved showing us the wedding portrait of his beautiful bride and himself. They were a most handsome couple. Maybe you could post that picture. I think he would like that very much. Nick would share the cards he received from our Aunt Lois and let us know when when they phoned each other. Please accept my family’s heartfelt sympathy.
