Andrew C. Sewall

Commander Andrew C. Sewall, United States Navy (ret.)

Andrew (Andy) passed away peacefully at home on September 6th. He was born in 1943 in Evanston Illinois to the late Robert and Mildred Sewall. After several family moves growing up, Andy ended up attending high school at St. Procopius Academy in Lisle. The monks provided an education and discipline bar none, that Andy absorbed. Upon graduation, Andy considered going into the priesthood until a friend convinced Andy to join him in a visit to the Naval recruiting office at Great Lakes. This would change the direction of his life forever.

For the next 23 years Andy would attend the Naval War College, Fly Hot Air Navy Balloons, receive the Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and, most precious to him, his Naval Aviator wings. He flew many different aircraft during his naval career, but spent the most time in the A-7 Corsair II, deploying to the aircraft carriers USS Forrestal, Independence, Nimitz and Eisenhower. He accrued 6,000 flight hours and 987 carrier landings. Of which over 300 were night landings!

A transition to civilian life still found him in the aviation industry working for premier companies such as DalFort Aviation, Boeing and AAR Corp. Andy was a deep thinker, problem solver and had the ability to convey to others the vision of the ‘Big Picture’ and nurture them go to make it happen.

In his personal life, Andy was an avid reader, spending winter months pouring over all various subjects. He became a student of clocks. All and anything to do with clocks. A German friend from the Black Forest in Germany guided him as much as possible. With clocks of all kinds in his collection it numbers more than 100. Andy also became a student of golf, studying, practicing, and playing. He enjoyed this pastime the most with his wife Laura and League members on Mondays.

Andy had a great sense of humor and an enormous heart. His generosity, kindness, giving and loving nature made him a beautiful soul. He will be greatly missed by all.
