Interment:

Annette T. (Meziere) Smith, 84, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many, passed away peacefully at home Dec. 4 surrounded by her loving family. She was born Jan. 10, 1939, in Natchitoches, La., to Robert Earl and Marie (Metoyer) Meziere. Annette was a homemaker before waitressing for many years, most recently at Ki’s Restaurant in Glendale Heights. Raised primarily in Chicago, she ventured to the suburbs for the first time in 1963, and lived in Glen Ellyn for 25-plus years before moving to West Chicago, and for the last seven years, in St. Charles. She was married to Jerry for 58 years before his death in 2016. They loved traveling near and far, to visit relatives in Wisconsin, on cruises to the Bahamas and Italy, and spending time on the beach in Huatulco, Mexico. For someone who was fond of saying she “Grew up on the Cane River in Louisiana,” Annette (unlike her husband and kids) wasn’t much for the pool because, of course, she’d have to get her hair wet. The lifelong Cubs and Blackhawks fan was an excellent cook, a hard worker (sometimes working on Mother’s Day) and always easily made friends and made people feel comfortable. She loved playing cards with her siblings and friends. She was active in the Catholic Church, and enjoyed her time as a Eucharistic minister. Annette was preceded in death by her husband; sister Dorothy; and her parents. She is survived by her children, Michael (Sandra), Steven (Diane), Nancy (Mark) Gronau, and Brian (Michelle); many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four sisters and four brothers; several nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends. There is a celebration Mass at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at St. Matthew Church, 1555 Glen Ellyn Road, Glendale Heights. A visitation will be begin at 8:30 a.m. Following Mass, a brunch will be held at Ki’s, 705 North Ave. Arrangements by Salerno’s Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake St., Roselle.

Please accept our deepest condolences. Grandma was one of the sweetest people you could ever meet. She treated Sandy and I like family from the first time we met her. She was always smiling and always had a big hug for us. She will be missed immensely. Love, Mike and Sandy Heraty

I have very fond memories of cousin Annette over the years. My mom, Lorraine, and Annette were first cousins and came to Chicago from their native Loisiana at around the same time period . Her dad, Earl and my grandma, Mary were siblings. I remember visiting with Annette and her family over the years and she was always such a caring and incredibly positive person with a huge heart. She always made me feel special. My deepest sympathies are extended to the family along with prayers.

Auntie Net and Uncle Jerry, how I loved to hear their names when I was told as a child that I was going to their house. All the memories come flooding back. Being the son of auntie Net’s sister Cecilia, my mother. I am one of the first cousins. The house in Glen Ellen, the swimming pool in the back, the Great Danes! Oh, how I loved it! I remember Auntie Net as kind, generous but firm. You knew she expected you to behave and you did. I loved my time staying at her home. It is one of the special moments of my childhood. I loved Christmas at her home, where all the Meziere’s would get together. I loved playing with my cousins when the Aunts and uncle’s would get together for just a “few” hours of playing cards. I was very saddened to hear of her passing. All the memories come flooding back. I know I’m starting to ramble and repeat myself but I’m so filled with gratitude that she was my aunt. I will think of her often. I think of all the brothers and sisters just about everyday. Thank you Auntie Net. Thank you for everything you ever did for me. I will love you always in my heart. Christopher.
