It was the third time they invited us to visit the sunny Phoenix metro area during miserable Midwest winters. Refusing seemed mean, so we packed our bags in 2008 and hopped on a plane. We were not close friends; our last memory was arguing with Charlie over the price of a flow blue piece he wanted. Yet we arrived to receive warm hospitality and delightful weather. The first thing in the morning, as soon as our feet hit the floor, Charlie called us for breakfast. It was a first-class breakfast of which we lingered over for at least an hour. Our days were as carefully planned as our breakfasts. Days were filled with antiquing, touring most of the metro area. We scootered down different aisles in the shops, each hunting our own treasures. The evenings ended with dinner on the patio or some interesting restaurant. We talked as people becoming friends do and husband Jim kept us laughing. They introduced us to the small resorts for people over fifty-five years and we loved the lifestyle. Slowly we got to know our hosts, the ones we nicknamed the best hosts in America. Dorothy was the type you wanted as your best friend, sweet, loyal, and bright. What you saw is what your got. Charlie’s personality was more complex. He could be as gruff as a brown bear when upset by your behavior. But inside that bear, was a heart of gold. We will never forget the kindness he showed to us in many ways. A bright man, he taught us so much about things we planned to purchase, assessing a flow blue piece, and the world in general. A month later we purchased a home in Arizona only twenty minutes away. And that friendship continued to grow. That night we purchased our new home, Helen even taught Charlie how to watch college basketball Kansas style. And the friendship continued to grow, convinced we made the right decision in coming so many years ago and we cried when they returned to Chicago to live. Arizona was just not the same. We miss our dear friend.

Charlie was one of the sweetest and happiest men I know . I’m grateful that I got to enjoy his company along with Dorothy‘s at some of the wonderful dinners they served me at their home and also at mine. Of course, dinners were always served on our flow blue! Charlie was instrumental in helping me navigate around the Flow Blue conventions when I first started. He offered to share a table with him at sales. I always had a great time with Charlie and Dorothy; they were my favorite people! I’m so blessed to have known him.

I was very saddened to learn of Charlies passing, but I pray that your many happy memories of him will comfort you and your family during this challenging time. Thanks to Charlie's great personality and joyful outlook on life, he positively touched many lives. I have fond memories of our many golf games together and his famous shrimp hors d'oeuvres he served at his cocktail parties. I'll definitely miss him and will always consider it an honor to call myself a "Friend of Charlies." Nyle

We can't separate our memories of Charlie without Dorothy. When we joined the flow blue club over 20 years ago, they "semi-adopted" us and we fell into another world. Charlie provided us guidance about flow blue and related activities. We have many fond memories of social outings, adventures and get togethers with a variety of friends. We will always remember the fun that we had together. Fondly, Christine and Peter Waller

The last time I talked to Charlie was a couple of months ago, and he was in great sprits. I will greatly miss him. We played a lot of golf together. I remember one time he hit is drive and a cat jump over a wall and took his ball in his mouth and ran back over that wall. What a way to loss a golf ball. That has to be one will never to forget. Mine wife,Joey, brother Nyle enjoyed many dinners with Charlie and Dorothy over the many years here in PeppleCreek and Il. Dorothy, may you be strong an hug your family as I know your feelings now. Much Love Rollin.

For the years that I chaired the FBICC convention's auction, I had the pleasure of Charlie's assistance as the space manager for our events. He brought competence and dedication to a job that benefited our whole club, and he made sure we had fun along the way - his sense of humor was both spicy and dry. I was always happy to give him advice on cleaning difficult pieces of flow blue, but the debt I owed him could never be repaid. I am diminished by his passing. Bon Voyage, Uncommon Friend!

Charlie was my first friend when we moved next door to the Washers in Pebble Creek. While we were building our home, Charlie would send pictures to us of the progress. When we finally got here it felt like Charlie had been a friend for ever. He will live in my heart with fond memories.
