Donald J. Carani
Beloved husband of Carol (nee Dressel) Carani; Devoted father of the late Elizabeth (late Harry) Keil, Brian (Janet), Kevin (Sally), Paul (Lisa), and Jennifer (John) MacDonald; Loving son of the late Paul J. and Rose R. Carani; Dear brother of Richard (Joyce), James (Mary), and Robert (Kathleen); Cherished grandfather of fourteen and great-grandfather of twenty-one; Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews. Donald J. Carani, 89, passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2024. Born January 1, 1935, in Chicago, IL, Donald was devoted to his family. A 1952 graduate of St. Ignatius High School, Don served two years overseas in the United States Army. On his return he met the love of his life in Carol Dressel. Married Feb. 1, 1958 they recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Don was a successful small business owner, lector, thespian, pilot, and philanthropist. Don enjoyed watching old western and war movies, spending time with his family at the lake, and traveling the world. A long-time parishioner of St. Walter’s Parish, Don served in many roles supporting the parish. In his later years Don was a passionate supporter of Parkinson’s research, various medical missions, educational foundations, and organizations serving the less fortunate. A serious and stoic individual, Donald’s life was a great example of how successful one can be with hard work and determination. He will be dearly missed, but we are joyful knowing he is reunited in heaven with his dear daughter and all his friends and family who preceded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Parkinson’s Foundation at www.parkinson.org in his honor. For anyone unable to attend who would like to view the mass, it will be livestreamed from St. Walter Church Roselle on YouTube at 10 a.m. CST, Friday, February 23, 2024.

Donald Carani was a model human who was the most influential man in my entire life. If I can be half of what he was, then my life will be complete. Can't thank him and Carol for all the times they visited us in my life including my Naval career. I love them both so much!

The obituary reads, “Dear Uncle”, and it is a beautiful way of describing Uncle Don. I have many cherished memories of crazy fun family parties in backyards, sunny days on the pier (alongside Buck), holidays and weddings, and the list goes on. Uncle Don was the staple, always present, and always with a nugget of wisdom to share or a thought-provoking question. When Liz passed away, Uncle Don said to me, “you have been praying for her, now you can pray to her“. I have carried that with me, and I’m sending prayers to comfort Aunt Carol and all of the immediate family and friends who have been loved by Uncle Don. I will miss you dearly, dear Uncle Don. Rest up for the next celebration!

Cousin Don rest in peace. Many great memories of days gone by, I have a brotherhood connection with Donald and brothers Rich, Jim and Bob. Don was always around to keep things from getting too far out of hand when we were kids. Rest in peace, and he will always be my prayers.

Our deepest sympathy on the loss of Don, a wonderful man and friend. We were truly blessed to have Don in our family of friends for so many years. May the loving arms of the angels and all those in his family who have passed before him and with whom Don is now reunited, be wrapped around Don as they welcome him into his heavenly home. May the Lord Himself greet Don with "Well done my good and faithful servant." Rest In Peace Don, until we meet again. God Bless you always, Love you, The Gotos, Larry & Darlene
