Our “baby” brother passed away peacefully with all of his brothers and sisters by his side … Barbara, Louie, Marianne, Joanne, Jeanne, Bobby and Tommy, along with spiritual presence of our parents and our sister Lucille. Marianne read Gerard’s favorite childhood book, “Captain Kitty” as we stood around him. The last page of the book reads “ ’Dear King and Queen and People,’ said I, ‘The sun is getting low. We’ve really had a lovely time – Alas, it’s time to go!’ “And now, at last, we’re back again In Catville-by-the-Sea - We’ve been away, but I must say That Home looks good to me!” As Gerard was taking his final breaths, Barbara, prayed the Loving Kindness prayer over him … “May you be happy; May you be free; May you be safe.” She then prayed the same words for the recipients of Gerard’s liver and kidneys. It was a beautiful experience and a gift of God’s Grace that will live on forever in our hearts. Gerard was a very special boy, in many ways. Anyone who ever had the privilege of meeting him knows just how special he was. We greatly appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and thank you so very much. We are also very thankful for the compassionate care that Gerard received from everyone at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
