Dick was the sweetest, kindest, and most affectionate person to be called a son, brother, uncle and friend.
Although Dick lived his entire life with severe disabilities he never let that define him. He was a passionate sports enthusiast and knew everything about all Chicago professional sports… well everything except bowling. If you had the privilege to watch TV with Dick it is guaranteed it would be some sporting event or game. Poor Dick suffered a lifelong love for the Chicago Cubs growing up in a household of parents and siblings that were White Sox fans. His brother and sisters always said “To be a Cub fan in our house Mom must have dropped him on his head when he was a baby”. In the Spring time it was an endless day of Channel hopping between MLB games and the Chicago Blackhawks. If it was late summer and early Fall you could add in the Chicago Bears, any NFL game actually, and of course he had to tune into the Blackhawks as well.
Every single day Dick read the Chicago newspapers in a detailed manner. He would take the front page section and place it in the recycle bin. He would then read every single page of the sports section including the ads. After that he would move on to the famous people’s birthday section and finish off his morning paper routine by reading aloud the obituaries. A habit he inherited from his Mom and Grandmother. To them the obits page was a sporting event and that fit into Dick’s modus operandi perfectly.
His keen memory of all levels of sport statistics and analytics crossed over into his perfect memory of our family members, including second cousins, birthdays, anniversaries and all sorts of meaningful life events. He was his mother’s personal appointment book and calendar of events as he kept her honest in sending out birthday and special event greeting cards. Dick was highly social and loved meeting and being with family and friends at anytime. He was always wanting to have a BBQ or a quick party so he could watch, observe, learn and socialize with the people he loved. Dick was our family’s historian and it is in this moment of his passing we realize that we just didn’t have enough time with him. He was loved by all and he will be sorely missed by all.
