Salvatore Rosario Spaccaferro, age 66, born in Casteldaccia, Sicily, Italy, passed away surrounded by his family on April 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering compassion, sharp wit, and selfless service. Salvatore arrived in the United States at the age of 9 with his family. He learned English while in grammar school and eventually became the first of his family to graduate college. He continued his pursuit of the American dream when he went on to study law, graduating from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1985. For over 30 years, Salvatore served as an assistant Cook County Public Defender—fighting tirelessly for those society too often overlooks. His career wasn’t just a profession; it was a calling. He believed in justice not as an abstract ideal but as a daily act of love for one’s neighbor. Whether in the courtroom or among his many friends and family, Salvatore had a rare gift: he made you feel seen. His infectious humor, gentle presence, and warm smile had a way of putting people at ease—turning even the hardest days into something a little lighter. He shared his talents generously, not only as a brilliant advocate but also as a mentor to many, guiding with wisdom, patience, and an open heart. By his exceptional example, Salvatore showed us what it means to selflessly serve and be of service to others with heart and caring, to laugh without restraint, and to love without condition. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. At his core, Salvatore was a devoted father. Every decision, every effort, every moment of joy was shared most deeply with his family. They were his anchor and his greatest pride. He is survived by his wife Carol (nee DiTusa), son Rosario (Stephanie), daughter Rosanna (Billie), son Michael, and his cherished granddaughters Elizabeth and Caroline and step-grandchildren Kai and Anthony. Preceded in death by his parents Rosario and Anna (nee Novello). Dear brother of the late Francesco (Maria), the late Pietra (late Michele) Fricano, Maria (late Joe) D’Amico, the late Vincenzo (Gail), and brother-in-law Michael (late Frances) DiTusa. Fond uncle to many nieces and nephews, and beloved and cherished friend to many.
