Joseph P. Atria, 70, devoted and loved husband, father,

2023. Born May 15, 1953, to Joseph and Frances Atria,
Joseph Atria grew up in Chicago with his late sisters Cathy
and Becky and his brother, Philip. He attended Steinmetz
College Prep High School in Chicago, where he met
Mariella, his present wife, and many of his devoted
friends, before attending Northeastern Illinois University
and receiving a doctorate in education from Northern
Illinois University. A lifelong educator, Dr. Atria was a
high school math teacher for many years before becoming
the principal at Sullivan High School until retiring in
2011. Along with teaching, Dr. Atria served in various
administrative roles for the Chicago Public Schools
system. In addition to working in education, he had a
passion for real estate, owning multiple properties across
the Chicagoland area throughout his life and successfully
founding Atria Realty, which he owned and operated for
many years. However, his proudest achievement was his
loving family. He is survived by his wife, Mariella (nee
Rotondi), his two adored children, Valerie (Geoffrey) King
and Joseph; his three grandchildren, Eleanor, Liam and
Everett King, his brother, Philip, and many cherished
members of his extended family. He was predeceased by

Atria. A memorial will be held Saturday, July 15 from

Valerie and Joey: Your dad was my best, best ever friend throughout our lives. It all started when his parents moved into Galewood in 1968 55 years ago when we both lived in Chicago 2 blocks from each other in sophomore year of high school, that is when we first became friends that never wavered. I am at a big loss now because we had done so, so many things together during and after high school. Sandy and I have been saying special prayers for your dad since we lost him. Now it feels so final it has broken our heart. I wanted to tell you and Joey that I have been so honored to have known your dad and I am sure Aunt Sandy feels the same. I will always keep him close to my heart forever. Joe and I both were each others best men when we were both getting married, me to Aunt Sandy and your dad to your mom when we were so much younger than now. Your Dad always encouraged me to be a more successful person in my life than I was when I was much younger. I always looked up to your dad. He helped me find my way in life pertaining to my career. Your dad was and inspiring model in my life. I was so very honored that your dad asked me to be God Father to you Joey. Valerie to you and your brother Joey from me and Aunt Sandy we want you to know that may your Dad Joseph Atria rest in peace for eternity in heaven. Since texting came about your dad and I would always text each other every week no less than every other week. There were times that we would pick up the phone when we hadn't heard each others voice for awhile. My heart is so broken and I feel so lost with out your dad. Aunt Sandy and I want to extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy to both of you. Always call on us anytime should you need anything in your lives that we can help you with. Forever Uncle Mike and Aunt Sandy Caligiuri. ❤️

I was. an. art teacher. at Clemente High school and met. Joe there. He. was always very nice, quiet and. conservative. We were all young and. going. through challenging times teaching in those days. My husband and. I went. to Joe and. Sonia's. wedding. It was. a very hot day and. night and. the. air conditioning. failed at the reception hall, but. Joe. and. Sonia. made the. best of it. I was impressed. with all that Joe. achieved in later. years. He. was. a gentle giant! May he. rest in peace and. may his families be. consoled with the loving. care. of God. I'm sure. Joe. will continue to help them all from heaven. With love and prayers, Toni Lorvig {Antoinette Lorvig}.

I would like to express my husband Art's and my most sincere condolences to the Atria family. Joe was one of my favorite friends at Steinmetz High School. He was kind, a gentleman, and so witty. Joe could lift anyone's spirits with a witty comment or even better his impersonations of some of our more eccentric teachers. As a retired educator, I just know Joe must have been an amazing teacher and administrator. I have fond memories of our days at SHS. When I think about Joe a smile always crosses my face. I wish the family strength and send prayers to get through the sad times ahead. Rest in Peace, Joe. You will make a great angel.
