Our deepest condolences to the family of Robert Smith. Bob was a wonderful longtime and loyal patient. He always had a good story, interesting idea or funny memory to share with us. He was so kind and thoughtful; he would surprise us by bringing educational gifts for our young children. After his extensive dental implant treatment, he even designed a prototype wearable “facial icing system”. He granted both Dr Foxson and myself equal rights to all proceeds should we want to have it manufactured. He was so appreciative for his treatment that he offered and did in fact speak with other patients who were thinking about having the same treatment completed. He was a great and thoughtful man who was looking out for others, he will be greatly missed. The offices of Dr Andrew Wiers and Dr Joshua Foxson

Bob was a good friend and a thoughtful and generous person. He would tell excellent stories (regarding his life experiences in the Army and with various employers) that would make you feel like you were there. They always ended with an ironic but upbeat and humorous twist. He had a wide range of interests, everything from baseball statistics to zydeco music. Bob was mathematically minded and invented an easy to use and clever algorithm to schedule days off that we called “Smithsked”. He would annually produce an elaborate “March Madness” probability sheet to forecast the winner of the basketball finals. I remember that Bob enjoyed numerically calculating the exact optimal retirement date for everyone who asked, based on an elaborate spreadsheet that took into account the fact that remaining leave credit was rounded off to the nearest month. I’ll never forget Bob’s stories or his friendship. My thoughts and prayers are with Bob’s family and friends.

Although we never met in person, Bob and I became pretty close over the years. He was a great help to me when I was writing my book, “Run Rabbit Run”, as he became my editor and created the index...quite a feat for a 660 page book. And he did it the old fashioned way. Bob was an asset to have on your team. He was a math genius as far as I’m concerned. Although it was usually over my head, he never failed to impress me with his calculations. I phoned Bob a while back and we had a lengthy conversation...which was the norm with Bob...and like us seniors seem to do, we got around to discussing our health. I remember that he told me he was having some issues, but he didn’t seem overly concerned about it. I should have known that it was more serious than he let on. One thing I do remember from our conversation is that he mentioned more than once how glad he was that I had called...I might be reading more into it, but I think possibly he knew that would be our final goodbye.
